Shirakawa-go Village is located at the foot of Mount Hakusan in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, approximately 350km from Tokyo. In Japanese, Shirakawa-go means ‘White River Village.’ As one of the most famous traditional villages in Japan, a visit here offers a sense of nostalgia and tranquility in every corner. The highlight of Shirakawa-go is undoubtedly the Gassho Zukuri-style houses.
Gassho Zukuri architecture in Shirakawa-go has a history of over 300 years. The distinctive feature of this architecture is the steeply sloped thatched roofs, resembling two hands pressed together in prayer. The thickness of the roofs varies depending on the house, typically around 90cm, and the weight can reach up to 60 tons. These unique structures are constructed using natural materials such as straw, and wood, and are bound together without the use of nails but with ropes. The thickness of the roofs helps the houses withstand the heavy snowfall in winter, and they provide a cool shelter in the summer.
